Hallowed beings In the ‘altematlve’ pantheon, The Fall are made llesh at Glasgow Oueen Margaret Union on October 4 and Edinburgh Coasters on October 7. Their lack at commercial success belies both their inlluence and their status as one oi Britain’s most consistent singles bands, with gems like ‘Flery Jack’ and ‘The Man Whose Head Expanded’ to their credit. Under the orchestration oi the enigmatic and learsome Mark E. Smith, The Fall have developed an intense, compelling hard rock style, repetitive percussion and rockabilly twang much to the lore.

events and is named after the JAMC’s debut LP ‘Psycho Candy‘ released this very week! For feedback, great pop tunes and a Bad Attitude. The Jesus and Mary Chain are currently reigning supreme. Pity they‘re not the future of rock and roll though.

TUESDAY

Glasgow

0 Fruits ol Passion plus White Bombay Bicycle Club in Rooftops, Sauchiehall Street. Jangly pop types. The Fruits reappearing in their native town, no doubt with fewer guitar solos and more strident females vocals. Support band White are brand new, rather flavourful and possibly worth seeing as they have a weird heavy metal/dance/pop crossover mish mash sound and the most handsome and charismatic rock

The new material, premiered on the current tour, makes much use of Brix Smith’s smooth tones, the perlect toil to husband Mark's monotone sneer, over unprecedentediy melodic material country-blues accoustic slide guitar is employed on one oi the tracks on the preview cassette. The alleged drabness that has put so many oil The Fall seems to have been superseded by songs (l) at buoyant tuneiulness. This might be the time to be converted. You might not get another chance. Edinburgh

0 Val Ooonican Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place. 7.30pm. £5.50, £4.50. (Children and OAPs half-price). No guitar histrionics here; nor does Val revive a flagging show by threatening to hurl himself off the PA stacks. Take junior along to see how a pro does it.

Edinburgh

0 David Cassidy Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place. 7.30pm onstage 8pm. £8.50, £7.50, £6.50. [try to be charitable to those who really can’t help themselves, but Cassidy even in his heyday reeked of cash-in, and nowadays well, to be categorized as sub-Wham! is sinking truly low. God intended David Cassidy records to be played back-to-back with the Cramps at Gothic discos. In this context it‘s such a waste.

Latest in the present wave oi American guitar bands to gain widespread attention over here, The Long Ryders ruse traditional country elements into their rock-based sound. Much ol the publicity solar on this tour has centred on the debt the band owe to the seminal Gram Parsons, mainly due to Long Ryder Sid Grittln’s recently-published biography oi the man. This current interest in all new American rock trom the Byrds-y REM to the very wondertul Husker Oii could result in The Long Hyders being dismissed as just another trendy group oi no-hopers, but i would reckon their appearances at Glasgow Oueen Margaret Union (5 October) and Edinburgh Oueen’s Hall (6 October) to be worth leaving the armchair lor.
