LEVIATHAN Inspired by Herman Melville’s 19th-century novel, Moby Dick, Leviathan is the latest offering from award-winning company James Wilton Dance. An energetic blend of dance, martial arts and capoeira, the show finds seven dancers moving athletically to the sounds of electro-rock band Lunatic Soul, as Captain Ahab and his crew try in vain to conquer nature. LAST CLOWN ON EARTH Pleasance Courtyard, 5–28 Aug (not 14, 21), 5.40pm, £10–£13 (£9–£12). Previews 2–4 Aug, £8. Celebrating 20 years since its Fringe debut, multi award-winning Russian physical theatre company Derevo returns with its latest production. Through mime, butoh, visuals and sound, a deeply fallen and pushed around Anton Adasinky immortalises the cosmic figure of the clown, full of inner joy yet trapped in a never ending cycle of self-sacrifice and rebirth.

WERELDBAND: SLÄPSTICK Assembly George Square Theatre, 4–27 Aug, 6pm, £12–£14 (£10). Previews 2 & 3 Aug, £9. A collection of musical and humorous acts rooted in the music hall tradition, but with a modern twist. The Wereldband, based in the Netherlands, consists of five world-class musicians who between them have mastered more than 200 instruments. Släpstick is billed as a blend of virtuosic musicianship, nostalgic sentiment and physical comedy.

THE HUMOURS OF BANDON Dance Base, 8–27 Aug (not 7, 14, 21), 6.30pm, £12 (£10). Previews 4–6 Aug, £10 (£8). From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Triple Fringe First and Olivier Award-winning Fishamble presents this coming of age play about the trials and triumphs of competitive Irish dancing, for anyone whose childhood passion threatened to overwhelm their life.

A blend of circus, theatre and dance, from Quebec’s Cirque Éloize who transform classic film Metropolis into a virtuosic spectacle. As artists rebel, their grey cityscape is replaced by absurd humour, beautiful poetry and bursts of brilliant colour, in a world where fantasy defies reality. The 2014 New York Drama Desk Award Winner for Unique Theatrical Experience.
with an original score, award-winning choreographer Andrea Walker directs a cast of seven dancers in a story of identity and belonging.
GOSSIP ZOO Southside, 4–15 Aug (not 9), 8.30pm, £14 (£12). Gossip, misinformation and rumours are a cross-cultural phenomenon of humanity, explored in this new production from award-winning Czech choreographer Lenka Vagnerova, combining dance, physical theatre, puppetry and drama.

9PM ACÉLÉRÉ BY CIRCOLOMBIA Underbelly Circus Hub, 7–26 Aug (not 9, 14, 21), 9.15pm, £17.50–£19.50 (£16.50–£18.50). Circolombia took London’s Roundhouse and the Edinburgh Fringe by storm with its explosive debut show, Urban and now returns with Acéléré. The 13-strong company celebrates Colombia’s diversity, voices, dance and circus, with no shortage of risk-taking or exuberance promised.

A big hit at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, Elixir follows three enthusiastic, acrobatic scientists who attempt to create the elixir of life. The mayhem that follows is an enjoyable mix of impressive acrobatics and comic timing. Winner of First and Foremost Entertainment Award Brighton Fringe 2015.

PARIS DE NUIT Journey back to the 1930s with Budapest-based troupe, Recirquel Company and its band of circus artistes, dancers and musicians. Depicting life among those living on the fringes of Parisian society, the show is a hot, jazzy mix of acrobatics, juggling, tight-rope walking, Cyr wheel, live music and more – all performed up close and personal.
