‘The vomiting really puts people off’
After a storming 2015 Fringe debut, the Daphne trio of Phil Wang, George Fouracres and Jason Forbes are back. We probed them with questions that involved answers about sound effects, practical jokes and the Michelin-star meal that went wrong
You’re now on that difi cult second show. Which i lm sequel would you compare Daphne’s Second Show to and why? The Dark Knight, because it’s got a white guy, a black guy, and a Chinese guy in it. What’s your all-time favourite sound effect ever? The splat. Presumably choosing a name for the team was a heated debate over a period of days and weeks if not months / years. Can you reveal one of the close contenders? We considered Sum Lumps: a confusing play on the word ‘lumpsum’ and an accurate description of how collectively physically abhorrent we are. Question for George: what’s the one thing you like most about Jason as a performer? He is very meek and obedient. Question for Jason: what’s the one thing you like most about George as a performer? Sometimes he’s offstage. Question for Phil: what’s the one thing you like least about yourself as a performer? The involuntary projectile vomiting. It really puts people off, even if they’ve been enjoying the show up to that point. Hard to bring people back onside after that. What’s the closest you’ve come to being mortally wounded while on stage (in Daphne or elsewhere)? During Jason’s slapstick moments in every show last year. Your Radio 4 show is entitled Daphne Sounds Expensive. Obvious question, then: what’s the most expensive gift you’ve ever shelled out for? And was it suitably appreciated by the recipient? Phil bought his mother a £400 Michelin-star dinner for her 60th birthday. She had so much wine that the next day she couldn’t remember the meal. As an example of how irrelevant this question is to George, one Christmas, he had £20 to spend on his family of 14. They each got a Freddo and a letter of apology. The most

expensive gift Jason has ever bought is a pair of £600 shoes. The recipient was very grateful. The recipient was Jason. What is your favourite comedy trio ever? The Two Ronnies + Mr Bean. Name one Edinburgh show that you’re most looking forward to seeing in August? Phil: Jon Pointing’s comedy show Act Natural. George: The Fizzogs. Jason: Telenovela by Emma Sidi. If you were spending the month of August in London while ALL of the London comedians were in Edinburgh, would it make you really sad or very, very happy? Really happy. We’d perform at all the gigs and slag all the comedians off, so when they come back everyone will be sniggering at them and they won’t know why. What’s favourite punchline? ‘Ain’t they funny people, them Chinese?’ ‘Racist Comedian Bombs’ on YouTube). Who’s Daphne of all time? Daphne Moon from Frasier. the set-up

What’s the i nest practical joke you’ve been on the receiving end of? Someone once cut George’s ears off and threw them in a ‘guess how many beans there are in this jar?’ jar. He was a bit annoyed at the time but we all laugh about it now, which of course George can’t hear. Daphne’s Second Show, Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, 6–28 Aug (not 15), 5.45pm, £9.50–£12 (£8–£11).
