LOST MAP’S HOWLIN’ FRINGE The DIY collective descend on Penicuik with an eclectic mini-fest
‘We’re a DIY record label and grassroots collective of like-minded musicians predominantly scattered around Scotland,’ explains Johnny Lynch, founder of Lost Map records. The micro-label was set up by Lynch when he parted ways with Fence Records to start a new life on the remote island of Eigg (current population guestimated at roughly 100). The roster includes the lo-fi indie of Tuff Love (pictured), Lynch’s swoonsome electro/ acoustic alter ego the Pictish Trail and the soulful folk of Seamus Fogarty. ‘I used to think there was a Lost Map sound but it’s more of an aesthetic, a shared approach to making music.’ Pretty much the entire Lost Map lineup will be descending on Penicuik to recreate the label’s
Eigg-based mini-fest The Howlin’ Fling on a smaller scale. ‘Howlin’ Fringe is a new series of events we’re putting on outside the main cities which are basically showcases for what Lost Map is about but with a few extra special guests thrown in. I’m a big fan of pulling people into areas that they’re not familiar with, so this time it’s a journey to the forbidden world of Penicuik,’ laughs Lynch.
Joining Lynch will be the aforementioned Tuff Love and Fogarty plus Rozi Plain, Kid Canaveral, Randolph’s Leap, Supermoon and guests Slowclub (Moshi Moshi) alongside comedians and ‘some secret guests we’re not going to announce until the day’. (Henry Northmore) ■ Penicuik Town Hall, 8 Aug, 3pm–midnight, £18.
