COMEDY HITLIST
Brian Donaldson highlights some of the best comedy in the Fringe’s first week him. See feature, page 39. Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, 8–30 Aug, 8.30pm, £9–£12 (£8–£10.50). Previews 5–7 Aug, £6.
NISH KUMAR This stridently intelligent and (thankfully) very funny stand-up returns after his shameful omission from last year’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards shortlist. A more political show is on the agenda. Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, 8–30 Aug, 7.15pm, £9–£12 (£8–£10.50). Previews 5–7 Aug, £6.
LIAM WILLIAMS An act here who did get a fully deserved slot on that list of nominees gives us Bonfire Night. Among other things, there will be some musings over our attitudes to still celebrating a dead Catholic in early November. See feature, page 13. Free Sisters, 622 6801, 6–19 Aug (not 17), 11.30pm, free, 20–30 Aug, 7.30pm, free.
ALEX EDELMAN BEARD
The 2014 Best Newcomer is back with Everything Handed to You, a show about being young. That’s a theme the New Yorker assures us he’ll be continuing to drive home in his stand-up until he no longer considers himself to be of youth. Fair play to Two talented clowning and sketch comic actors unfurl The Grin of Love. Matilda Wnek and Rosa Robson will be at your service for a potentially baffling hour of fun. See feature, page 35. Sneaky Pete’s, 226 0000, 8–29 Aug (not 18), 1.15pm, free.
ADRIENNE TRUSCOTT Proving she’s no one-trick pony, the Wau Wau Sister delivers with, um, Adrienne Truscott’s A One Trick Pony. Oh well. It’s sure to be a provocative and much-discussed hour, nonetheless. See preview, page 49. Gilded Balloon, 622 6552, 8–17 Aug, 8.15pm, £12–£14 (£10–£12). Previews 5–7 Aug, £7.50.

STEWART FRANCIS JOSEPH MORPURGO
Pun fans will be in ecstasy over the full Fringe debut of the Scotland-based Canadian. Pun Gent is his fragrant hour. See feature, page 38. Assembly Rooms, 0844 693 3008, 7–30 Aug (not 17), 8.10pm, £15 (£13). Preview 5 Aug, £14 (£12).
Odessa was another highlight of last year’s Fringe and Morpurgo is back with a further multimedia affair, this time entitled Soothing Sounds for Baby (wonder if it’ll be anything but?). See feature, page 48. Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, 8–30 Aug (not 18), 8.15pm, £8.50–£10.50 (£7–£9). Previews 5–7 Aug, £6.
KATHERINE RYAN She’s been on most of the panel shows you can think of, but UK-based Canadian Ryan has risen through the comedy ranks here thanks to sheer determination and talent.
Nish Kumar
Kathbum features a discussion on her relationship with her homeland inspired by returning for a family wedding. See preview, page 31. The Stand 3, 558 7272, 7–22 Aug (not 17), 4.25pm, £12. Preview 6 Aug, £10.
SAM SIMMONS The surrealist Australian comic scooped the prestigious Barry Award earlier this year for his new show, Spaghetti for Breakfast. Who knows, maybe he’ll make it a double celebration? See feature, page 42. Underbelly Potterrow, 0844 545 8252, 8–30 Aug (not 17, 24), 9pm, £12.50–£14 (£11.50– £12.50). Previews 5–7 Aug, £7.50.
