DJ MONEYSHOT Eclectic mixmaster brings party-focused style to the capital
We’d love to give you the guided tour around the multifarious styles of Ninja Tune / Solid Steel’s DJ Moneyshot (aka East Midlands boy Macroy ‘Roy’ Spencer), but he’s willing to do it himself, so open his Mixcloud, sit back and enjoy the ‘greatest hits’.
‘First up,’ he says, ‘The Dischandler, my first attempt at trying to make a world-beating mix. It's fast and funky and takes in hip hop, funk and a few curveballs. Next is Mother's Ruin, my award-winning rock, pop, lounge and grooves mix. Nearly every artist on here is terrible, but the tunes I've found are amazing: it ends on a Bruce Forsyth number. To round off try my latest Nas tribute mix, Half-Man Half- Amazing. It should hit 100,000 plays soon, so a few extra listens would be lovely, ta.’

biggest hip hop night, the Hustler Showcase, while he was still at uni and bombarded the Solid Steel webcast (‘the place for creative mixes . . . their charter has always been “the broadest beats” so my style tries to reflect that’) with demo mixes. Live, he promises ‘heavy beats and party rap cuts. Old- school style, heavy on the funk. Don't expect modern bass music or clownstep. If you like your drums beefy and your beats doubled and scratched up, then you could do worse than getting your drank on to me.’ His advice is to listen out for Treva Whateva, Ty & Roots Manuva, his own crew the Allergies, and Beastie Boys backed up by Fleetwood Mac in there. LUCKYME FESTIVAL PARTY Glasgow label’s festival bash returns
Glasgow record label LuckyMe are heading to the capital for a festival special once more. 'It's really difficult to pinpoint the common theme between all the artists on the label. I think it's more of an aesthetic than a sound,' explains S-Type (aka Bobby Perman) who'll be playing the Edinburgh date. 'I can hear a minimal experimental track that sounds very LuckyMe to me, then I could hear a commercial rap track that sounds very LuckyMe as well.'
The art, music and party collective grew out of the hip hop scene but started to absorb the minimalism, techno and abstract beats played out in clubs across Glasgow. 'When I moved to Glasgow I was exposed to a lot more electronic music and it fed into my own productions and made me want to make music for clubs rather than just for home,' adds Perman.
S-Type is full of praise for his LuckyMe compatriots on the lineup: 'Eclair Fifi can play 10–15 different genres and make it sound seamless, she's a really good party DJ, she reads the crowd really well. Joseph Marinetti is a great producer and The Blessings' Martyn Flyn is a super-tight hip hop and club DJ. It's always a good buzz being on stage with each other. CRATE DIGGING DARKSTAR Melodic, densely atmospheric, at once minimal and psychedelic . . . production trio Darkstar have found a fitting home on both Hyperdub and Warp Records, and will be well at home in the dark, snug confines of Sneaky Pete’s on 13 August. With vocalist and songwriter James Buttery joining in 2009, their second album, 2013’s News From Nowhere, signalled a new direction, leaving their choice of tunes for a DJ set even more open. So, we asked for a heads up – here’s a few we might just hear on the night, as chosen by the group’s James Young
Nochxxx / Sensational – Sinbliss Actress put this out on Werkdiscs a while back and I've been playing it for going on four years now. It's off-kilter and lopsided in an interesting way – kind of like bashment, I suppose.
Nicholas Jaar – Don't Break My Love Again, nothing recent – he gave it away a couple of years ago. It sits right between something I'd listen to at home and something I’d play out, and the way it's been put together and how sonically striking it is makes me keep going back to it.
Gwillym Gold – Muscle This has just come out and was made in Konk [Studios, managed by the Kinks], where our studio is – I've done some work on parts of his forthcoming album. Muscle is the first thing he's released in about two years and gives a good indication of what the album sounds like. Micachu – Oscillator Snaz A very upfront, big, rough-sounding beat from Mica Levi. I love playing it out, it gets great reactions everywhere.
Darkstar – Your Love New from us on the forthcoming album, this is way more direct than anything we've done in a while and seems to be going down well.
