CAMBUYÓN The rhythm of the sea
F or over a hundred years, it was a by-word for friendly trading. Today, it’s the title of a show that celebrates rhythm in all its forms.
In the mid-19th century, British ships too large to dock in Canary Island ports would hang out a sign saying ‘come buy on’, and invite islanders to sail out and trade with them. ‘It was not only an exchange of goods, but of ideas and ways to live,’ explains director Carlos Belda. ‘Those English words became the Spanish word cambuyón; it was a cultural fusion.’ A fusion of another kind takes place in Belda’s show, which features hip hop and tap dance, body percussion, drumming and song. The different artforms come together
in a loose narrative set onboard a ship, and in various ports around the world.

Co-produced by in Tenerife and Barcelona, Cambuyón was created predominantly in the Canary Islands – the location influencing the show’s lively exploration of percussion, and how it has evolved through years of cultural exchange.
‘We live on an island, so the sea has been our way of getting to know other cultures,’ says Belda. ‘We love the ambience of a port – there are always new stories, new people and new situations.’ (Kelly Apter) Assembly Roxy, 623 3030, 3–26 Aug (not 13), 6pm, £15–£17. Previews 31 Jul–2 Aug, 6pm, £12.
