8m Following its huge success last year, Club Noir is set to bring some risqué decadence to the Edinburgh Fringe for one of the biggest burlesque nights the city has ever seen. Usually based in Glasgow, CN is giving the capital a taste of what it has to offer, as it takes over the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 16 August for a night that has to be seen to be believed.
I The Fringe welcomes some Hollywood royalty this month. Ninety-four-year old veteran writer Budd Schulberg is making the 3,500 mile trip from New York to Edinburgh to see the stage adaptation of his 1954 classic, On the Waterfront, directed by Steven Berkoff at this year's Fringe. Schulberg has been collaborating on the script for the production since Berkoff gained the rights to stage it three years ago. The show runs at the Pleasance Grand from 31 July-25 August.
I Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith has won the coveted Radio 2 — Heart of Jazz Award at the BBC Ja/‘x Awards. Just a week before performing two concerts at the Edinburgh Jazr and Blues Festival. See Prevrew, page 46.
I This year's Edinburgh International Television Festival continues to attract some of the small screen's biggest names and influences. The latest speakers to be announced include Father Ted writer and director Graham Linehan. PR guru Max Clifford and Turner Prize-winner Grayson Perry.
Linehan, whose writing credits include Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Big Train, Harry Enfie/d and Chums, The Fast Show and Black Books. will give a masterclass offering advice on how to create a hit sitcom. Elsewhere. two tip-and- coming writers from E4's hit series Skins. Daniel Kaluuya and Georgia Lester. will offer a masterclass with the show's creator. writer and executive producer, Bryan Elsley.
Turner Prize-winner Perry will make an appearance as part of a panel offering advice on How to Have a Good Idea. The festival runs 22-24 August.

Edinburgh International Book Festival continue to sell at record speed, with actor and writer Simon Callow, who also appears on the Fringe and at the Fesfivalof Politics, a recent and welcome addition to the line-up.

FRINGE ISSUES I The new Fringe box office system introduced this year has continued to have teething problems but the staff have been working round the clock to sort it all out. Fringe director Jon Morgan said theatre- goers shouldn’t worry: ‘We are absolutely clear that the Fringe will run as planned and we would encourage everyone to continue buying tickets for shows.’
ELTON FOR EDINBURGH? The rumours continue that the launch of Tracey Emin’s 20 Years retrospective at the Scottish National Caller of Modern Art wi 1 bring a flurry of stars to the capital. Emin fans, including Ierry Hall, Elton John and George Michael are all expected to be on the guest list for her show, which opens 2 August.
