ROBIN GUTHRIE
One-time Cocteau Twm brings an aural feast to Edinburgh
A sonic layer here. a melodic texture there — and so continue the musrcal exploits of former Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie. a man who invariably finds himself mentioned in the same sentence as the phrase ‘beautiful ambient soundscapesl
Grangemouth-born Guthrie IS bringing his much meditated-upon show Lumiere. which first toured the UK last summer. to the Fringe for two late- night shows at Underbelly Live.
Lumiere is an hour-long animated. abstract film to which Guthrie improvises a soundtrack of huge-sounding. orchestral sweeps of ambient guitars drowned in the loops and drones of various effects units. It's a lesson in shoegazing for the middle-aged that has some fine musical junctures.
Talk of the Cocteau Twins reforming has all but disappeared into the murky cyber black hole of forum-lore after rumours circulated last year that they might yet be prepared to give it another whirl. Guthrie‘s focus of late has been filmic — as well as Lumiere he collaborated with Harold Budd on the score for US director Gregg Araki's 2005 movie, Mysterious Skin — and he continues to run finger-on-the-zeitgeist label Bella Union with Cocteau bass player Simon Raymonde. home to the likes of Midlake, My Latest Novel and the Mercury nominated Fionn Regan.
Last year‘s Continental, his second solo instrumental album. was a familiar flirtation with his sonic signature-sound — after all these years. still the thing he does best. (Rachel Devine)
