THE SMOKING BAN
Going out is great at this time of year. Going home and not reeking of someone else‘s fags is even better. The ban's forced all the smokers out into the summer heat. and all that aluminium patio furniture outside the pubs has lent the capital a cosmopolitan flavour. And let's face it: everyone likes seeing the odd grouchy actor get knocked down a peg or two.

Ok. so you can leave the pub without stinking of smoke or having picked up a spot of passive lung cancer. But this just means those other odours - stale beer, sweat, flatulence - are all the more noticeable. All that has been achieved is the segregation of the addicted and the virtuous. And for the purposes of theatrical veracity the dogmatism with which the ban is imposed is infuriating.
