COMEDY FOR KIDS

Stand-up and bounce around

Alongside a roomful of boozy hecklers, an crowd of fractious kids must be the toughest gig imaginable for a stand-up comic. But in the capable hands of seasoned pros such as James Campbell and Phil Kay, the small people can become comedic putty. With shows running at the Gilded Balloon and the Spiegel Garden, Campbell joins Janey Godley and Mark Watson as the most prolific comics at the Fringe and in The Comedy Club 4 Kids (0000 ) he rounds off a fine bill with chatter and songs, including a version of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ entitled ‘Gnu.’ The compere on this visit was hot newcomer and extremely fresh-faced Matt Kirshen (whose own Fringe show revolves around how he is regularly mistaken for a mere boy) while a lad

Phil Kay has built a career around frenetically childish antics. And he is in his element here as he invites children of varying ages to give up their sneakers and sandals in Gimme Your Left Shoe (00.0 ). Infused by a whirlwind of energy, Kay allows them to get their footwear back after a bit of bouncing on a trampoline and the completion of a task. These vary from playing ping pong with irons (cold ones, obviously) to spraying the host (and us) with the contents of a pump-action water pistol. Makes you wish you were nine all over again.
