TOM CREAN: ANTARCTIC EXPLORER
Unsung hero is whiter than white snow
Aidan Dooley says he’s been told not to mention this, but he doesn’t have a script. That’s pretty impressive for an actor who has won awards in Dublin and New York for his one-man show. Will the crowds who turn up for his second five-week run of Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer in Dublin this September realise that not a word of it is written down?
Or will they recognise that what makes this play so spellbinding is the spontaneous power of Dooley’s story-telling? It’s not that he changes it much from night to night, it’s just that - like a stand-up comedian with a well-tried routine - he knows if he doesn’t feel it’s fresh himself, neither will the audience. ‘The heart of it is the story,’ says the actor. ‘I have an inner glow when I indulge in my imagination with Tom. I’m passionate about him. The minute I engage with an audience my duty is to him.’
With the kind of ice-bound dramatic tension of Touching the Void, the play recreates the adventures of Tom Crean, an unsung Irish seaman who journeyed three times to the Antarctic accompanying Scott and Shackleton. Because he didn’t keep a diary, he’s been largely forgotten. ‘He won an Albert Medal by walking 40 miles on his own to save a poor bloke dying of scurvy,’ says Dooley. ‘And he was an essential element to the Shackleton story. There’s a metaphor for hope reflected in these men’s perseverance and determination to hang on to life.’ (Mark Fisher)
