MARK RONSON
Party breaks from impatient hipster turntablist
We know him as DJ to the stars, a British born Yank who appeared as if from nowhere in 2003 with the chartbusting, floor-filling, hip hop juggernaut ‘Ooh Wee‘. There is however, so much more to the pouting crown prince of cool Mark Ronson. Son and heir to the late, great Mick Ronson, guitarist for a host of class acts from Bob Dylan to Elton John, and most prominently, David Bowie, Mark‘s stepfather is none other than Mick Jones of Foreigner, and he was once engaged to Quincy Jones‘ daughter Rashida. Pop royalty aside, Ronson has been rocking pop’s hoi- polloi since he was a teen, twisting the knickers of Sean Combs and Madonna while tinkering on the strings and skins from his formative first eight years in Blighty. Few would have considered that his guest-tastic debut album Here Comes the Fuzz was not only effortlessly produced but largely penned and performed by the boy wonder, few that is prior to the first release from the Exit Music: Songs with Radio Heads project, namely Ronson‘s masterful ‘floor funk reworking of the Brit miserablists’ ‘Just‘. Triumph as this juke-joint cover is it serves only as a teaser for his upcoming album Version, promising guest appearances from the likes of Jack White, Q-Tip and Lily Allen performing the hits of Coldplay, Britney Spears and Kaiser Chiefs. Add all this to the fact that he‘s a poster boy for DKNY and you have to wonder why we don‘t see more of this boundary- balking don dada. (Mark Edmundson)
