MARIA BAMFORD Odd, shy, wordy and very funny
Ask today's breed of tired, cynical stand-ups which of their peers they’re looking forward to seeing in Edinburgh, and Maria Bamford’s name comes up again and again. This squeaky, quietly intense American has blazed a trail with her live show Plan B, ‘a one-person sitcom from a comedian who can’t get her own', in which she plays a (mildly) heightened version of herself, her family, her agent and other weirdoes.
Like Demetri Martin, Bamford is thriving away from Seinfeld-alike US comedy clubs, finding her unique voice better suited to music venues, theatres and random gatherings of random audiences. ‘Comedy clubs are great and I do well as long as people are prepared to see me or something different,’ she says. ‘But if it's just a regular crowd of people out to have a good time, it‘s generally a very disappointing scenario for everyone. I’m a bit too odd, shy, wordy, and theatrical and I seem physiologically built to shake uncontrollany when someone yells something out. I'm currently doing a show in my living room on Friday nights for my neighbours and one week I was heckled, two cell phones went off and it was really hard to follow the musical dog act. I’ve tried heckling flash cards, having friends yell at me intermittently in conversation and this thing in Australia called “co-counselling” which involves being sat on.‘
With her family ‘somewhat irritated yet proud‘ of her impersonations, she‘s at the top of her various games in stand-up and voiceovering, has been branching into life coaching - ‘l’m into competitive living. I can help you win!‘ - and enjoying employment as an actress, snogging John Travolta in Lucky Numbers. She maintains she still thinks about him ‘when I pass the Scientology Celebrity Centre and wonder if he's “clear.” (Jay Richardson)
