Singer Madeleine Peyroux is getting a big push from her record company, including TV ads. It would be simple just to file her away as an over—hyped Billie Holiday soundalike, but her coolly swinging treatments of songs have a lot more to offer than just an uncanny resemblance in timbre and phrasing. She achieves the difficult balancing act of sounding both retro and contemporary, choosing from jazz standards, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. (Kenny Mathieson
