WHEN LINDSAY MET MALCOLM Miles Fielder looks at one of the greatest partnership British Cinema ever had LINDSAY ANDERSON and MALCOLM MCDOWELL

Lindsay Anderson gave Malcolm McDowell another man‘s cock. He also chopped off both of his hands. And he made him grow a silly-looking bum- fluff moustache. Under any other circumstances such treatment between friends and collaborators would be intolerable, but in Anderson and McDowell's case it represents one of the finest Creative partnerships in British cinema.

The three films in which the late, great Anderson directed McDowell, Britannia Hospital, 0 Lucky Man and If. . . to list them in respect of cock, hands and moustache and in their reverse chronological order, form a loose trilogy that comments critically on the state of the nation between the late 605 and the early 805. In each film (all written by David Sherwin, comprising his sole but significant contribution to cinema) McDowell is cast as Mick Travis, a public school boy in 1968‘s It. . . , a coffee salesman in 1973’s 0 Lucky Man and a documentary filmmaker in 1982‘s Britannia Hospital. The films are surreal allegories for class warfare, the pitfalls of capitalism and, in the less focused case of the trilogy‘s final. the end of the welfare state.

In McDowell Anderson found his perfect lucky/unlucky man. Capable of playing the multi-dimensional Travis as, variously, cheeky, arrogant and outraged, and understanding those traits to reflect a changing Britain, McDowell undertook the roles in the anarchic spirit in which Anderson envisioned them. The trilogy gave McDowell, whose is also an uncredited producer on 0 Lucky Man, his first film role (having had his scenes in Poor Cow deleted by Ken Loach).

Has there been another collaboration between director and actor so fruitful in British cinema? David Farrar or Roger Livesey to the mighty British filmmaking team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger perhaps. Alec Guinness to ‘daddy’ David Lean is also a close contender, but the product of the Anderson and McDowell partnership on the Mick Travis trilogy is narrower but more focused than these examples. And it speaks volumes that those three films are by far the most memorable on both men’s long and varied resumes.
