I AND IS THIS THE YEAR FOR women? After comedy critic Kate Copstick last year admitted she didn’t think much of the standard of her fairer sex comedians, women are being bigged up this year. Nica Burns, director of the Perrier Award, has punted four women Sarah Kendall, Lucy Porter, Katherine Jakeways and Natalie Haynes as possible nominees, though reviews aren't bearing her out on this one. Nominees for So You Think You’re Funny Award are stronger. In two out of three heats so far, a woman has been selected: Zoe Lyons (winner of the BABYCHAM Funny Women 2004)

in 1992 - while Jenny Eclair is the only woman to have won the Perrier back in 1995.

I IN THE EVER EXPANDING Festival world, if there‘s another Fringe there‘ll be another award. Willy Russell (Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine) and Tim Firth (Calendar Girls) have teamed up to create a new one for up and coming Fringe groups. The winner of the WR Foundation Award will receive £5000 towards a piece of new writing to be performed at the 2005 Fringe. ‘In 1972, I blagged, begged and borrowed until I had enough - just enough to produce my first Edinburgh show,’ says Russell. To avoid such a fate, email dpl@davidpugh|td.com or call 020 7434 9757 for an application form.
