DANCE BASE AT THE FRINGE

Rich pickings on the Grassmarket

‘She’s dripping with delight,’ says Morag Deyes of dancer Ellen van Schuylenburch. But the buoyant artistic director of Dance Base could also be talking about her own feelings regarding the choice dance on view at her venue.

Netherlands-born Van Schuylenburch made an indelible mark on 19805 British dance as a founding member of Michael Clark’s troupe. Ripe, the Fringe bill of solos in which she appears, will show the value and beauty of maturity in a youth-dominated art form. Her elegant ‘Silence’ is steeped in the Indian martial arts she began studying a decade ago. ‘It describes my journey to the here and now, using the body not as a place of confinement but as a laboratory, 3 life centre, a work of art itself,’ says Van Schuylenburch.

‘Missing’, by British contemporary dance mainstay Namron, is equally personal. Set to Peter Gabriel’s song ‘Father and Son’, it arose from an emotional double whammy: Namron’s son went (and still is) missing at about the same time as the veteran dancer's father died. This short, poignant piece helped Namron work through his feelings of loss.

Ripe is rounded out by ex-Rambert dancer Gary Lambert's ‘Degrees of Freedom', 3 look at identity and intimacy, and ‘The Hurdy Gurdy Man’ by America’s Stephen Pelton. Movement in the latter is derived from documentary footage of Hitler’s body language, set ironically to German lieder by Schubert and Schumann.

Other Dance Base treats include a hugely enjoyable double bill by Scottish Dance Theatre, choreographed by Didy Veldman and Sean Feldman, three pieces from Scotland's tip-top hip hop/contemporary stylists Freshmess, and the aptly titled Exquisite Indian Dance, plus loads of workshops, classes and free film screenings.
