the Streets. Morrissey. the Zutons or Embrace. They join Book Festival star Dame Muriel Spark. whose 22 August appearance sold Out JUSI two hours after tickets went on sale. Hip hop singer Kelis makes a particularly welcome appearance in Edinburgh after
her gig as suppert act to Missy Elliott at Glasgow's SECC was cancelled earlier in the
year due to ‘technical difficulties'. Organisers say her stage equipment was not shipped
over from the States in time. but those in the know suggest that tickets weren't selling as well as hoped. By contrast. Kelis had no problem selling out her Liquid Room gig.

I Like a phoenix from the flames, new venues rise. Cowgate Central opens in Wilkie House right next to the fire site on the Cowgate and Pod Deco makes use of the South Clerk Street Art Deco Odeon cinema, whose long term future is still up for debate. Meanwhile, the proposed Wigwam in Bristo Square has had to pull out due to funding not materialising. Most shows programmed for the space have been relocated. I And not wanting to be outdone by every other damn cultural milieu. Edinburgh's art galleries have got together for the first year to launch an Edinburgh Art Festival. Twenty-Six galleries and artist spaces have combined to put the art into arts.

and Conflict in Northern Ireland' is hosted by the Harry Irwin Foundation On Monday 9 August as part of the Fringe. Speakers include Oscar- nominated playwright Dave Duggan. Liam Kelly. Martin Dowling and Bill Rolston who presents a slideshow of his photographs of the famous murals. Book tickets through the Fringe.
I Perrier and Tap Water Awards go head to head again this year with the former awarded a £7500 cheque and lots of fizz on Saturday 28 August. The latter rewards ‘Fringe performers who also use the arts to educate and encourage critical thinking’ and will be served straight on Sunday 29 August (visit www.tapwater awards.org to find out more).
I And sharpening up its radical edge. the National Gallery is hosting a brief but highly controversial performance piece of Derek Jarman poetry taking disciples' names in vain in front of sacred art. See Art listings.
I And finally, news reporter Michael Buerk makes a late entry into the Book Festival as part of the War Reporters Series on Saturday 28 August. He will be joining Kate Adie, Martin Bell and Allan Little on the same day for an Open Mind debate on the Role of the War Reporter.
