DBC PIERRE

Prodigious inhabitant of Springerland

Just a normal guy having a laugh

The literary world loves its enfants terribles, doesn’t it? But the truth is that any regular Joe who takes the odd pint and smokes the odd fag would qualify for the position of hellraiser in the rarefied air of the book world. Step forward then, DBC Pierre, the publishing world’s latest prodigy and a damn fine writer to boot.

The 41 -year—old’s debut novel, Vernon God Little, was published at the beginning of the year to equal parts lavish praise and irate scorn. Dealing with a Columbine-style mass murder in smalltown Texas, it’s a deeply funny and vastly moving satirical romp through Jerry Springerland with unhinged characters, beautiful dialogue and a wonderfully assured voice.

The author was born in Australia and raised in Texas and Mexico, before decamping to London, where Vernon God Little began to take shape. It seems odd to write about Texas after you’ve left, but Pierre would argue differently. ‘The distance was helpful because it distils and takes the clutter out of the place,’ he says down the phone from a secluded cottage in Ireland. ‘When you’re living there you don’t know where to look next because everything seems to be a pertinent detail, but with distance you’re just getting the essence of it in your mind. In the same way, I’m writing a thing now which involves London, and it’s handy to be up here in an antithetical place in the forest.’

Ah, the tricky second novel. With success comes a certain amount of pressure, surely, so how’s this one coming along? ‘I’m just trawling my way through the tail end and it’s fucking killing me,’ he says, as if he’s really enjoying the experience. ‘The whole thing’s a bastard.’ In his six months in the spotlight, Pierre has created something of a reputation - a piss-up here, a swaggering situation there - but really he’s just a normal guy having a laugh.

‘My agent sat me down and said: “Listen, you’ll probably write some crap as well, so enjoy this while you can,”' he says, laughing. ‘The thing is, I’m coming out of a really strange headspace into this experience, because being a writer is not something I’d ever wished or hoped for, although I love it now. Now I really, really want to do this forever; I've got a backlog of dozens and dozens of ideas that I want to do, so I need to at least honour that and not fuck it up.’ (Doug Johnstone)
