Post-war Cornwall
Recreating past glories is never easy, but Trevenna theatre's revival of their hit play about the effects of war on a tiny Cornish community may just prove the exception to the rule. Justin Palmer from the company, who plays star-crossed lover Tim Henderson, as well as performing the assistant director‘s role feels the play’s success is largely due to writer Simon Turley. ‘lt‘s partly the strength of the writing and the fully rounded, believable characters. But, more importantly, it harks back to a lost innocence and a lost generation that people enjoy being reminded of.‘
Performing within the confines of the eight-foot high Underbelly has its own implications, but such a cavernous enclosure will also add to the haunting atmosphere of the war scenes. Palmer feels other aspects of this revival improve upon the original. ‘The revival features seven of the original cast, but as the original was a youth theatre production, we're being much more academic, with the cast taking a 360 degree approach to their characters.’
