The Murderer Lives at No 21 .0. FI/l7)/7()US€ l, noon. Here the lesson begins. The Henri-Georges Clouzot retrospective starts here. with his debut feature from 1912. Originally released here as L 'Assasin Hap/re au 2 I, this follows the investigations of a slightly whimsical police inspector played by the wonderful Pierre Fresnay. He poses as a priest in order to infiltrate a boarding house where a serial killer is hiding out. This was a gtiirky, occasionally flimsy debut for

Steve‘s the all-Australian bloke: married with two kids, white collar career on the way up, likes a beer, cheats on his wife occasionally. Steve’s wife. Alexandra. is the all-Aussie Sheila: looks after the kids, makes dinner, does the dishes. When Steve arrives home for his birthday celebrations, he finds the house empty and a video tape labelled ‘Play me’. He does, and is shocked to his socks to discover his wife has plotted an elaborate act of revenge for what she sees as years of domestic abuse. But who’s in the wrong? Neither husband nor wife is written off as simply misogynistic male and hysterical
woman. By maintaining such ambiguity, Rolf de Heer, director of the equally controversial Bad Boy Bubby, ensures polemical reactions to his film along the lines: he‘s a bastard; she‘s a bitch. But don't assume you‘ll necessarily
side with your own gender.
It’s a film that’ll continue to provoke debate long after the final reel, but it also works as a riveting mystery thriller. De Heer teases us by slowly, slowly revealing who did what to whom until the tension becomes almost unbearable (in this sense it’s reminiscent of Michael Haneke’s domestic shocker, Funny Games). The battle of the sexes starts and ends here. (Miles Fielder)
