Dance Base gets to the pointe
From a small, site- specific piece in 2001 to a fully-fledged programme in 2003, Dance Base has grown into a Fringe venue to be reckoned with. Alongside performances from Freshmess and Scottish Dance Theatre, the centre has organised a European triple-bill featuring Austrian dancers, Helen Weinzierl and Willi Dorner - both of whom are known for
their distinctive style - and a new commission by Scottish choreographer, Norman Douglas. Last seen at the Festival Theatre in 2002, when his Ensemble Group formed part of a memorable evening of dance, Douglas has been beavering away in London creating a brand new duet, Cries & Whispers. Performed by two young professional dancers, the work focuses on our human need to be loved, and how easily we become addicted to it. Unusually for Douglas, the female dancer is on pointe, but don’t let that fool you - this is no hearts and flowers ballet. ‘Pointe work is used either to be very chic, or to make lovely shapes and be romantic,’ he says. ‘But we don’t do that. A lot of the lifts are very beautiful, but the rest is quite brutal.’ Aiding and abetting that brutal feel is a punishing soundtrack by Newcastle soundmeisters, Big Border Breaker. ‘The music‘s hard, you couldn’t just sit and listen to it, it would be impossible.’ But set it to dance and chances are this will be another Douglas work worth watching.
