For many years. this Swedish company has been synonymous with one man: Mats Ek. Although he stepped down from his position as artistic director in 1995. Cullberg is still seen very much as his company - until now.
Come September there'll be a new guy in town. Johan lnger, a dancer who cut his teeth with Jiri Kylian at Nederlands Dans Theater. and a choreographer whose take on human emotions is reminiscent of Ek's style. but with a power all of its own.
Cullberg’s Festival show features one dance from each man: Home and Home. a work for ten dancers by Inger. in which he says the main character ‘falls into a dream where she can see weaker and stronger sides to herself and her alter ego.‘ And there's Ek's Fluke. a witty crowd-pleaser which lnger describes as 'Mats' gift to some of the dancers he has worked with for a long time - choreographed portraits of who they are.‘
So the ghosts of Cullberg past and future will both be alive and well. As lnger says: ‘I hope the programme can strike a middle chord. that you can see where the company has come from and where it's going.‘ (Kelly Apter)
