CHRIS GEDDES Modern Lovers at Ego, Edinburgh. Fri 1 Aug
Even though he's appeared at respected Edinburgh psych-soul night Modern Lovers on numerous occasions after meeting DJ and promoter Craig Jamieson in the traditional friend-of-a-friend-of-a- flatmate way, Chris Geddes is far more recognisable in his day job as Belle & Sebastian's keyboard player. ‘l've been DJing through in Glasgow for quite a few years now.‘ remembers Geddes. ‘From a couple of guests slots at the Art School to my own night at Yang. and now a gig at the CCA. Even though being in the band is ultimately more rewarding. I‘m kind of easier to please when I‘m DJing — it's less effort to just play a record you like than to actually make it.‘
So how do Geddes‘ tastes fit in with those of Modern Lovers? ‘Well, if you‘re playing at someone else's night and you know their reference points. it‘s important to try and play something their regulars will enjoy.‘ he reasons. ‘I know Craig's got an amazing northern soul collection. though, but he doesn't mind the club having a broader base than that. So if I end up playing the northern soul crowd off the dancefloor with some sixties R&B or modern hip-hop. it's all right. as long as it's a good record that deserves to be heard.‘
