JANET STEREET-PORTER: ALL
THE RAG
Media queen speaks out. Again
These days we journalists are asked to have opinions about everything. This can get a bit wearing at times, unless you're some kind of superhuman dynamo with apparently vigorous views on anything from celeb hairstyles to EC farming subsidies. Janet Street-Porter has made a fine living from being just such a person, and good luck to her. Whether she gets under your skin, or you find yourself agreeing with her, her outstanding quality as a media voice is that you just have to listen to, or read her.
You might dub it a one-appalling-woman show or a fascinating insight into a prominent media figure. Whatever you see it as, it's a new departure for Street-Porter. Inspired by Tim Fountain's one-woman show Julie Burchill is Away, performed by Jackie Clune, Street-Porter got the idea that she should do something similar, but appear personally. There’s potential for disaster in such endeavours, but she's taken out insurance by employing David Benson, author and performer of such popular Fringe character portraits as Think No III of us and To Be Frank to help her. But the show looks largely unscripted, with the lady speaking of her life experience in the media, in marriage (she's had four of those) and her opinions on the world. Just the latter could keep you going for many hours.
