THE GRIMM TALES
The good. the bad and the ugly
POLLING ALL THE RIGHT smmcs AT THIS YEAR’S FRINGE
We salute all those strung-up. gloved-up. sewn-up creatures and their creators
‘That's the way to do it!‘ screeches a hook-nosed, baby-bashing puppet in a striped booth. It might have been Mr Punch's style. but we‘ve come a long way from there baby: puppetry is emerging in the UK as a many-faceted medium where innovation drives it on to more imaginative realms. So we celebrate you true DIY masters of the entertaining arts. Creators, designers, directors and actors: much respect.
It is fitting that Edinburgh‘s Fringe should offer an array of puppet experiences. Every year the Netherbow Theatre becomes the focus for the Puppet Animation Festival and this August, in its last festival for two years before closing for major renovations. it plays host to three little minxes: Ivan the Slug, Goldilocks and Greyfriar‘s Bobby. The shows bear the trademarks of their creators with Richard Medrington‘s Slug imbued with a sharp-edged satire. Kenspeckle's Bobby providing a full~theatre. spectacular storytelling experience and Handyworks‘ Goldilocks following the classic tradition. Over at the Fairytale Laundry at Assembly Rooms, Ailie Cohen incorporates her art and drama background into a one- woman Rumplestiltskin show (see preview), while Mark Pencak‘s Utter Nonsense (The Stand) fuses puppets, animation, music and film. The boundaries are limitless and that‘s not to knock old Punch and Judy. but just that the ways to do it have, thankfully. become endless. (Ruth Hedges) I“; I , :r-‘va ..', ,. " _: ', . ' . .- ...
