PAUL TONKINSON

Tonks for the memories

Lucky old Paul Tonkinson is just back from Egypt. It has. however, been almost all work, work, work. ‘l've been entertaining the troops of HMS Chatham who were the first guys to fire from a boat although they don’t call it a boat - and the last to leave in the war.’ he says. ‘They‘re good as a crowd. really eager. They give you lots of information about the captain. you do it back to them

More radical revelry

Reyell emhodres the satrrrst's; paradox -r they are prs;sed off wrth the world's; rnrustrees; (read Bush rn the Whrte House). hut sueh rnrustrees pr‘oyrde them wrth enough polemrr: materral to put food on therr plate. 'lhat's the guestron.‘ says the yearold. ‘lf Bush stays; rn, not only wrll l he ahle to keep my house. I’ll he ahle to huy a second one rn Tuscany'

So what would he do rf he had to Choose hetween makrng a lrvrng and makrng Bush heg'? ‘I suppose there would he a wonderful personal satrsfactron rn hrrngrng down the Bush

and they think you're the best comedian they’ve

ever seen.’

Edinburgh audiences might not be quite so

easy to please. But Tonkinson has experience on his side. Time Out's one-time Stand Up of the Year has presented Big Breakfast (enjoying what is commonly known as mixed success), played gigs across the globe and sold out his last trip to Edinburgh in 1999.

This year he'll be doing some proper acting (Playing for Reward, at the Gilded Balloon) as well telling gags. But his focus still seems firmly on comedy. ‘I decided to do Edinburgh partly as a tool to re- invigorate my stand-up because I've been doing telly and other stuff,‘ he says. ‘So I've got a lot of new material. There is an element of rebirth. not to get too new age about it.’
