DANCE BASE 1ST MOVE/5TH MOVE Food for thought

Tongue-tastic Mika

Watching 15! Move (.0. ) it’s difficult to decide if this is a glass half empty or glass half full experience. The wonderful Rosie Kay shines alongside an enigmatic Daniel Yamada in ‘Honey You’re a Pig’ as party celebrations and human relationships take on a manequinesque absurdity At moments the human body is transformed into a mixing bowl in this stylish and darkly humorous piece. But ‘TV Dinner Smallpetitklein’ fails to deliver the same resonance as three dancers attempt to expose the mindset of a lonely young woman: while the staging is minimalist and well-conceived it lacks the sensitivity and balance of the first piece. Alternatively, if Madonna in drag is more likely to tantalise your taste buds, 5th Move’s Mika (00.0 ) is the act for you. Flavoursome and entertaining, this isn’t so much a dance piece as a cabaret extravaganza. Ancient tradition merges with a funky bucolic style as Mika and his impressive dance troupe Torotoro showcase a humorous blend of break dancing, singing and puppetry as Maori dance anthems meet techno dance beats. Populist fodder but fun nonetheless. (Anna Millar) I Dance Base. 225 5525. until 7 7 Aug (classes until 3/ Aug) EKG—{‘8

BOUNCE Hip hop, it don‘t stop C...

First off. to all you hip hop heads. this is not a sell out hip hop yOu couid take yOur granny along to doesn't have to equate to shit that would have 2-Pac and Biggie turning in their gangsta rap graves. Beunce skillfully transposes the elements of B-Boy Culture «that's DJing. rapping. graftttiing and breakdancmg to youi and condenses most of them ithe grafittiing is absent) into one adrenalised. 60min spectacle. And that is no mean feat. There is no attempt at plot or real depth here but LA's DJ Haz/e leads his lS-strong crew through a variety of headspinning iliterallyi routines to a greatest hits of nip hop soundtrack and even casts a deft glance towards the origins of the art :00. MOUSSON (MONSOON) Failing to whip up a storm 0..

Met/sson ilvlonsoonl is an accomplished albeit slightly flawed piece of muSical theatre. Strange perCussive and string instruments whiz. thump and Vibrate through the air to create an enchanting stage Of setinds that delights with its tones and ingenuity. From whistling suits and musical ships to the early wooden versron of the light sabre the show is original and entertaining. Where it fails is in the impenetrable narrative about a small island responding to progress and the lasting iinpreSSIon is that Au Cul du Loup could be capable of much more comedy and drama if not restrained within the confines of this stOry. ilsabella WGIF) I St Stephens. 558 38:33. mm 24 Aug (not 72. 79/. times vary. THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR

Stunning adaptation OOOO

Creating elegance out of the grotesque is Quite a task. but this is exactly what Theatre de l'Ange Fou have achieved in their stunning adaptation of Nicolai Gogol's The Government Inspector. A fifteen strong cast glide and creep and shuffle through the dark satire of a corrupt Russian state i'l may take bigger bribes. but I‘m a practicing Christian'l. Shabby grandeur decks the dancers and at times images of Russian military are proiected onto the back wall. The movement is effonlessly llUld and the music provrdes mystery. beauty and darkness. But while each performance is given commendable intensity. the whole piece may benefit from a bit of cutting. (Ruth HedgeSl I P/easance. 556 6550. until 26 Aug f/iOt I3, 20/. 3 70pm. EB—EQ (EB—£7).
