IRON
New play with murder in its heart
Rona Munro’s affability allows her a leeway that would alarm you in others. ‘I - and I think most people - are capable of murder,‘ she says. From anyone else such a sentiment would make you shift uneasily in your seat, but from her it sounds like common sense. ‘Sometimes it comes from an intensity of feeling like love. If you really love someone there are moments when you could literally kill them.’
It’s the starting point for Munro’s Traverse premiere, Iron. The author of such hits as Bold Girls and The Maiden Stone, as well as of a succession of film scripts, including Ken Loach’s Ladybird, Ladybird, has returned to the Traverse with a tale of filial difficulties between a young woman, Josie, and her mother, Fay. The action occurs 15 years after Fay has
been committed to prison for the murder of Josie’s father. Two
prison guards look on as the younger woman tries to get to the heart of her loss, and understand her mother.
‘lt’s not the kind of murder which has been brought about by years of abuse, or the kind that’s controversial in the media because we’re not sure about the woman’s guilt,’ Munro
explains. ‘It’s more cut and dried than that. The murder is really about something anyone could do, so the relationship
between mother and daughter should be one anyone can relate to.’
The murder serves to up the intensity of the tension between a parent and a grown-up child in a room. Most
of us can see the conflicts there. (Steve Cramer)
