How do you think your looks affect how you’re perceived by the public?
I don‘t know. It‘s weird because you don‘t think about it that much because you‘re trying to concentrate on being funny. A lot of comedians are unstylish — I‘m actually wrong to say this. but there aren‘t many stylish comedians — so [just thought that I want to look good on stage. I‘m a bit of a weird retro freak and my hair looks like I‘m in the Rolling Stones in 1967. I know that‘s a bit strange. but some people like it. There aren‘t many stylish comedians. I don‘t think. There‘s a few. Tony Law‘s quite stylish.
So what is a ‘Voodoo Hedgehog’?
I wanted a name for the show that was punchy but abstract and I thought of a name and then I thought of a good piece in the show to go with the name. I thought 'Voodoo Hedgehog‘ had a nice ring to it.
I read an interview where you talked at length about shrews. Why shrews in particular?
I like woodland creatures because they don‘t get much press. do they? It‘s always lions and leopards and fancy animals. and [just think that the woodland creatures get left behind a little bit. I‘m trying to put them back on the map. Like Spartacus I‘m getting them all together and we‘re going to go on a crusade. ljust think they‘re cool. Like the root vole. The root vole and the wood pigeon: they‘re quite low down on the food chain but they make me laugh because they‘re very linglish and a bit tatty and they‘re always brown; always brown and beige. [just think they‘re funny. Much funnier than zebras. Although l do like zebras.
