Terry Hunter is a standard bearer for the sound of old-school Chicago. He began plying his trade as a mobile disc jockey, like his father before him, on the Chicago party circuit, later turning to production and committing some of the first disco-inflected house cuts to vinyl.

‘I got into DJing, many, many years ago now,’ Hunter explains. ‘I was listening to mix tapes, all the shows on Chicago radio and at that time it was truly amazing to me that these guys were making a whole lot of records sound like one. So I learned the ropes watching other DJs. Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, a lot of the Chicago club DJs like Wayne Williams, these were my inspirations to get into the music. And it was definitely disco music. The classics of disco were very big in Chicago, and that’s what was considered house music in Chicago at that time, before it turned into the tracks coming from people like DJ Pierre, Adonis and all of the

early house pioneers.’

The moment when disco morphed into house remains Hunter’s baseline, and he has a bee in his bonnet about stripped down tracks for the dancefloor. ‘Listening to disco records,’ he says, ‘people forget that these were musicians, this music was very soulful and it was very song-driven. For those that know me, they know that I’m not a hard DJ, I’m not a commercial DJ; I’m a vocal man, my music has to have soul, I have to be touched by a record. Even if it’s just the way the high hat is programmed, or the way the bassline runs, l have to find that soulful groove. l have no time for mechanical music.’

Despite the success of his vinyl outings, Hunter is a DJ through and though, taking the chance to move a crowd over studio knob-twiddling every time, having perfected a tried and tested style guaranteed to keep the punters on their toes, working levels and £08 to home in on the vital breaks and most uplifting vocal bars. ‘I am and always will be a DJ,’ he says. ‘I like to embed the hook of a record in the crowd’s mind, an experience they will not forget.’
