A harassed desk-jockey falls asleep at his keyboard. mid-rhythmic cursor tap. and enters the bizarre dreatnworld of the Tokebi. magic Korean goblins proceed to liberate his office- bound spirit by beating seven shades of shit out of anything that comes to hand. This narrative is not maintained throughout the production. but the set pieces of dervish dancing and rhythmic attack that remain are stunning. l’urigfvltiak's energy is infectious — take your granny to 'Iokebi and she'll be gurning at Pure before the week is out. Designed to cater for ‘cultivated tastes and interests‘. the BBC 's Third Programme was launched in 1946. just a year before the Festival. Even when it became Radio 3 in the early 70s. no-one would have anticipated it becoming part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. That Radio 3 has chosen to up its coverage of the Fringe this year and to present several live shows on-air and online from its Edinburgh home of Dance Base. is a significant complement to the Fringe. Day-time live broadcasts bring familiar voices such as Stephanie Hughes and Joan Bakewell. but it is the late night shows featuring world. weird and rock
music that will surprise regular listeners.
it is in the 10pm slot that things hot up. as the stations specialists come out in force. The ever eclectic Andy Kershaw plays host to Fringe visitors like The Bhundu Boys and one-time Soft Boy Robyn Hitchcock. while Clare Martin explores the world ofjazz and Verity Sharp draws on the cream of contemporary classic performers for her Hear And Now - Live show on 24 August.
