Daniel Kitson: Love, Innocence And The Word Cock eeee Pleasance. until 27Aug. 10.30pm. Daniel Kitson admits he looks like a cross between a lecturer and a paedophile. He could give William Hague a run for his money in the looking old before your time stakes. He’s got a stutter, he's balding. his beard looks like it could snare a cricket ball. And he's 23. To say that Kitson doesn‘t subscribe to a stand-up stereotype would be stating the obvious. What isn't obvious is Kitson’s humour.
Sure he can laugh at himself — imperative for him more than most — but there‘s no pathos here. Instead you get the feeling that Kitson enjoys being different; that he's been blessed with an individuality he wants to share.
And share he does. Quickly dispensing with mic to create a more intimate atmosphere. he tells us he shared his first kiss when he was nineteen. that his speech therapist thought he was ‘speciai‘. that he drinks Ribena in pubs. This comic confessional is charming. He’s strangely sexually aggressive (‘Don‘t say “Aw”. you have to back that up with an actual fuck.') but unthreatening. and the audience side against hecklers like playground bullies about to get their comeuppance.
Kitson is gifted. natural. unassuming and oh so fresh. Okay. so he looks like a nerd. but playing to the packed sauna of Pleasance Below every night. this is no geekshow. Make no mistake. it‘s Kitson who has the last laugh. (Maureen Ellis)
