Court: In the Mud/Michelle Man: Y Gilded Balloon II Teviot. 16—26 Aug. 3.15pm. Dance double- bills don‘t come more promising than this. Based in Madrid. Michelle Man is an Anglo-Chinese dancer whose impressionistic. autobiographical solo at last year's Fringe had hardened critics reaching for superlatives. She's back. after literally hundreds of hours of research. ‘Trying to find the meaning of me.‘ Man admits. is hard work. ‘I know the main track I‘m on. but I‘ll allow my body to play tricks on me and take me off on tangents.‘ The result is a teasing yet emotionally transparent balance of volatility and vulnerability set to Britten. Beethoven. the plaintive lilt of Ibrahim Ferrer and the punch of DJ Food. Paule Turner. whose flamboyant and fearless alter ego is named Duchess. hails from Philadelphia. There he eoncocts ‘interdisciplinary choreographed theatre' for his vibrant young company Court. Their Edinburgh debut has its source in a startling ritual of the animistic religion Voodun (voodoo). People dig a large hole in the woods. filling it with offerings of perfumed oils. champagne and herbs. There they pray as they bathe body. mind and soul in the earth from whence they came. and to which they'll eventually return. Turner uses this as the springboard for 'a deep. personal investigation of community‘ meant to entertain and involve us on all levels. (Donald Hutera)
