Bedbound Dublin Theatre Festival. Traverse Theatre. 3—12 Aug. [0.30pm. When Enda Walsh‘s Disco Pigs premiered at the Traverse in I997. it was astonishing in many ways. There was the raw. adolescent energy of the two performers. the half- brutal. half-romantic vision of the playwright and. above all. the mad heightened dialect. a colloquial Cork patois tnade weird with lopped-off words and upside-down syntax. The screen version is premiering in the Film Festival (18 and 20 August) and should be well worth checking

Meanwhile. Walsh‘s latest play. Bedbound is making its first foray outside Ireland where it premiered at last year‘s Dublin Theatre Festival. An exchange between a

crazed father and his crippled daughter. it‘s 1 a 55-minute comic collage of storytelling and chatter. Walsh calls it ‘writing in panic auacksfi

‘It has this breathless quality to it.‘ says Fergus Linehan. director of the Dublin Theatre Festival which commissioned the play. ‘It gets frantic and claustrophobic. then calms down again. It‘s every bit as rich and exciting as Disco Pigs.‘

And like that play. it is both tough and human. 'Enda‘s terribly sympathetic.‘ says Linehan. ‘He has great faith in human nature beneath the grittiness. He genuinely thinks these people are good. but they happen to be living in this mad. twisted world.‘(Mark Fisher)

Spymonkey’s Cooped Pleas-mice. [-27 Aug. 7.25pm. Spyrnonkey‘s highly acclaimed comedy. Stiff was a terrible disappointment to its wn'ter. Lord Murdston. It was. in fact. intended as a tribute to his poor dead wife. a heart- rending essay on the trials of mortality. Now Murdston returns with the tale of orphan Laura Du Lay. exiled to a country mansion. where all manner of rum and uncanny events await. and an innocent girlish flirtation hides a terrible secret. ‘Lord Murdston is a creation of our fevered imaginations. an excuse to do daft stuff on stage. For me. Murdston‘s a lot of fun. The comedy comes out of what we‘re like as people.‘ explains Spymonkev‘s Toby Park. ‘I play this pompous. boring actor. and in rehearsals. that‘s who I am. Petra. who plays Laura. is incredibly energetic in reality. and also astoundineg thick! She really represents what we‘re about. and that‘s delighting in being very. very stupid.‘ Inspired by 70s pulp Gothic. the writings of the Brontes and Mary Shelley. Cooped promises to be a wildly camp mystery adventure of Seooby [)oo proportions.

‘lt‘s risky; we take so many leaps of fantasy. you get the feeling anything can happen. But it‘sjust great to be able to give people that.‘ (Olly Lassman)

But if you‘re an admirer. this piece. written way back in the 80s. but never before performed. could be for you. and does contain a grain of harsh truth. Here the grand old bastard of the theatre is bitching about his colleagues. and not. by all reports. even sparing himself in a satire which places a group of back-stabbing. fawning showbi/ luvvies in a posh brasserie as the poll tax riots go on outside. Their detachment from events in the real world seems to be the point. at a time when sortie artists were still trying to be political. (Steve (‘ramerl
