FESTIVAL SPECIAL Barry Cabanas

Forget decks ’n’ effects - Barry's supplies the sex 'n' effects

Simulated sex shows on stage? No this isn't Manumission, it’s Edinburgh’s own brand of decadent clubbing for the fun-loving and misguided, and it makes the Ibiza shows look positively limp. Why? Because hardcore penetration smack in the middle of your clubbing soiree is just so last year and, anyway, there’s simply no need when you've got ’da gimp’.

Co-promoters Tom Mason and Fraser Stewart know better than to look a gift horse in the mouth or, in this case, a sexual deviant in the genitals, and as soon as they stumbled across a PVC- clad stranger on The Meadows, they knew they were on to a winner. This was back in ’98 when they’d been running their monthly variety club, Barry Cabanas, for only a couple of dates. The legendary Cuban Brothers were already appearing at the club, along with a host of strangely talented Dls and comedy artists, but still something was missing. The club needed someone who was prepared to do just about anything in the name of bad taste and good fun. Messrs Mason and Stewart had found just the freak.

Usually not prone to conversation, ’da gimp' tells us the beautiful story in his own words: ’When I moved through here, I didn't have many friends. So I was wondering through The Meadows and Tom found me and immediately saw my potential. I kind of act as a host most of the time. At the start of the night | go out and entice peOple into the club with my sexual antics. They can't resist it, nobody can resist da gimp.’

Also hard to resist at the star-studded Barry Cabanas Festival date are the awesomely talented Dynamic Duo in a hip hop freestyle set, complemented by Edinburgh's friskiest breakers. Boombox resident Harry Let's Go will also be laying down some tunes, Calvetto and Gregor will be manning the karaoke machine and Edinburgh's favourite funny man will be hosting the whole evening's shenanigans that culminate in 'da gimp's’ unique stage show. You can bet that it’s going to be some climax. (Catherine Bromley)
