Beatniks To
The Bar
Keep Wednesdays free for Beatniks To The Bar, the brainchild of American- bom, but Edinburgh-based, singer- songwriter Fiaere. With seven acts per night, the plan is to have, she says, ‘eclectic music with the emphasis on
songwriting’.
Performers include The lost Soul Band’s Gordon Grahame, Martin Stephenson, Harry Horse, liick Robertson and Fiaere herself - who releases her debut cn-EP, ‘Girlfriend’ to coincide - plus performance poets like llukumo flocks and the inimitable Barry Graham. Sets will be short, to keep boredom at bay: ‘lt’s not going to be something that’s too sickening and long, so everyone can get that nervous, excitable feeling - and won’t feel that they’re watching some “MTV
This is the third year of ‘Beatniks’, and carries on threads from her earlier concept of ‘the acoustic rave’ - ‘which is not a folk club, not any particular kind of music, but across the board’. Previous outings, intended to showcase Edinburgh-based singers and poets otherwise neglected in the

SPIRIT OF SCOTLAND
Over the last decade. and especially over the last few years. there has been a huge increase in interest in traditional storytelling. both in Scotland and abroad.
In recognition of this, the Official Festival this year celebrates this hardy indigenous folk art by inviting a couple of Scotland’s greatest tale bearers with a guest musicians to a late evening ceilidh every night of the Festival.
Here’s some of the great talents who’ll be appearing: George McPherson is descended from the hereditary Seannachies to the McLeods of Skye. Duncan Williamson has thousands of stories and songs learned on the road as a traveller. Stanley Robertson has the stories of the North East. Willie MacPhee is also a traveller. a great singer and performer on the little chamber pipes, Sheila Stewart is from the legendary family of the Stewarts of Blair. And with your ticket you
receive a dram!
Down at the Malt Whisky Society. where the storytelling is in its second Festival year. they give you two drains! But they have thousands of gallons of it on the premises. The same format applies here; music. song and stories of ghosts. lost love. unbelievable adventures and. of course. the water of life. (Norman Chalmers)
