SCIENCE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Ever been puzzled by Pythagoras or baffled by Doyle’s Law? Don’t despair, the best way to learn about the principles of science is through first- hand experience.

At the Science Dome, part of the fifth annual Edinburgh International Science Festival, two dozen hands-on exhibits and workshops aimed at anyone over seven make science easy and fun. Here, you can construct a rocket which will shoot a few hundred feet, make a steam boat out of candle, copper tubing and wood, assemble a zoetrope, blow the largest, weirdest bubble ever, or complete a variety of exciting tasks which aim to illustrate a range of scientific phenomena. Structures, forces, pulleys and chaotic motion are illustrated in easy and practical ways, making the Dome one of the most popular venues of the festival.

Elsewhere, the range of events, lectures and exhibitions is immense. There’s a Royal Mile maths tour, a boomerang workshop, a series of talks at the Royal Museum of Scotland which includes lectures on toys and physics and virtual reality, and a Madlab for children over five, where they can build their own flashing, gyrating, noisy object.

For adults, petrified of lagging behind their keyboard-literate offspring, let your children guide you to the Computer Arcade where a dozen

machines demonstrate the latest breakthroughs in technology. Here, prepare to be astounded by computers which speak, read handwriting or play music.

As Isaac Newton noticed, even an apple falling from trees illustrates a complex scientific principle. We just need to ask the questions.
